Rutland Intermediate School Academic Overview
All students: Rutland Intermediate School is a Grades 3-6 elementary school with approximately 550 students. We prescribe to Positive Behavior Interventions and Supports (PBIS), Responsive Classroom and use a Multi-Tiered System of Supports (MTSS) to meet students’ needs. RIS uses Standard Based Grading and reports student progress in terms of Year-End Standards on a 1-4 scale three times per year. RIS holds Parent-Teacher Conferences twice a year in October and March.
Grade 3: Seven Highly Qualified Teachers (HQT) instruct approximately 125 students in third grade. A typical day includes 90 minutes of uninterrupted Language Arts instruction and 75 to 90 minutes of Math instruction. Students in grade 3 are all in self-contained classrooms with a class size average of 17 students. All grade 3 students have lunch and recess with their own grade level and a daily Specials class. Specials are as follows: Art, General Music, Library or Technology (rotating each week) and P.E. twice per week.
Grade 4-6: In each of grades 4 – 6, seven Highly Qualified Teachers (HQT) instruct approximately 425 students. Grades 4 and 5 have three dyads (students switch teachers during the day for academics) and one self-contained classroom each. Grade 6 has two dyads and a group of three teachers using flexible grouping throughout the year. A typical day includes 90 minutes of uninterrupted Language Arts instruction and 90 minutes of Math instruction. All students in grades 4-6 have lunch and recess with their own grade level and a daily Specials class. Specials are as follows: Art, General Music, Library or Technology (rotating each week) and P.E. twice per week. Students in grades 4 – 6 also appreciate the opportunity to participate in a Fine Arts Block (FAB) twice per week for forty minutes. During this time RIS offers Band, Orchestra and Chorus to our students, along with a small group lesson taught once per week.
